Chocolate Fish Races

Chocolate Fish Races run once a month on a Tuesday evening when Daylight Savings begins. Watch out for the occasional weekend and winter races too. The aim of Chocolate Fish races is to built up your fitness over the season - it's a great 30 minute workout! The  course is approximately 10km along the MTB Loop. Racing formats vary with mass starts, handicaps, team races and lap races to keep things interesting. While some race to prepare for upcoming events (eg Longbeach Challenge), most come along to improve their fitness and catch up with friends - and some just ride for the chocolate fish that every competitor receives at the end! The emphasis on these races is casual and social. Children have the option of completing a shorter loop where parents can ride alongside. Note that there will be no marshals so riders need to be familiar with the course.
Once Summer hits the Chocolate Fish races are held fortnightly.

Races begin at the Skills Area on Dobson Street West where plenty of parking is available.

Registration 6.15pm, Race start – 6.30pm.
  • Children -  Members $1, Non-members $2
  • Adults -Members $2, Non-members $5

If you do not want to race and would rather cruise the course at a leisurely pace you have the option of starting after the last racer has started.

Dates will be emailed to members and posted on Facebook.

Skills Sessions

Picture
Skills sessions are run by Tabitha Armour - a PMBIA Level 1 (Beginner to Intermediate) Instructor. This qualification is internationally recognised and was funded by the club so we can up-skill our members at a greatly reduced cost. Fee: $20 per person for a 2 hour lesson, children under 18: $10 - you must be a current member of Mountain Bike Ashburton.
Whats involved?
Lessons are run in small groups (maximum of 6 people) and focus on practicing and repeating skills so they become second nature when you head out onto the trails. Lessons go for around two hours and cover body position, braking, cornering, climbing and a few extras depending on time. Lessons are held in the park on the North East side of the Ashburton River Bridge and parts of the Mountain Bike Track.
Who are lessons aimed at?
Beginner to Intermediate riders. From ages 8 years to adults. You will benefit from a lesson if you are new to biking or you've been biking for a while but don't have confidence on berms/corners or riding down hill. A word from the instructor: "A lot of riders think they are too good or have been riding for too long to need a lesson - then they say they need help with cornering - well cornering is a basic skill, so if you are having issues then you should do a lesson to brush up on your basic skills."

What equipment do I need?
You must have a mountain bike with gears and functioning front and rear brakes (this applies to kids lessons too). You should be familiar with the gears. Bring some warm clothing and something to drink.
What if I'm not a member?
Then you should join and take advantage of other offers from local businesses and help contribute to the cost of maintaining and developing the trails - see our membership page for more details. We may have spaces available for non-members and these will be charged out at $50 per person, $20 for children.
How do I book?
Two ways - get a group of up to 6 together and lets arrange a date, or look out for an advertised session on our facebook page. Don't worry if you only have 2 or 3 riders, we can advertise for more to fill the session. Happy to do groups of all kids, ladies or families etc(note that parents need to pay if they participate in the session with their children) .
Available dates: we have to juggle around work and family commitments, which are ever changing. So if you have a group we can try for a Saturday or Sunday (10-12 or 1-3). Once daylight savings kicks in we can add in after-school or evening sessions (4-6pm, or 6/6.30-8/8.30pm).

Fill out the form below if you'd like to have a session and we'll be in touch.

Just one form per group / individual.
